EF-S lenses on full-frame RF bodies — auto crop

Canon EF-S (APS-C) lenses work on EOS R full-frame bodies through the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, but the camera records in crop mode. What that means for resolution and field of view.

Short answer

Yes — Canon's adapter statement covers the EF-S line-up, and EF-S lenses insert into the same adapter. But an EF-S lens projects an APS-C image circle, so a full-frame body does not use its full sensor: it records using the APS-C crop area (the familiar ~1.6× crop). The table below is generated from the verified dataset for every EF-S lens × full-frame body combination.

What that means for your photos

On APS-C RF bodies (EOS R7, R10, R50, R100) the same lenses cover the sensor natively — no crop penalty.

Every full-frame body has a Canon statement

The automatic crop is documented per body: the EOS R / EOS RP knowledge-base article states that with EF-S lenses “a 3:2 aspect ratio in the center is captured, magnified approx. 1.6× (APS-C size),” and the EOS R5 / R6 / R3 product manuals state the 1.6× crop “is set automatically, and no other option is available.” The EOS R1, R6 Mark II, R8, and R5 Mark II manuals carry the same pair of sentences on their lens-attachment pages (an “approx. 1.6× crop factor is applied to the center of the regular image area”).

Bodies without IBIS in the dataset

These full-frame bodies have no in-body stabilization: Canon EOS R8, Canon EOS RP, Canon EOS R. If the EF-S lens itself has IS, stabilization still works through the adapter; otherwise there is no stabilization on these bodies.
